Rebbe Nachman-“It is a great mitzvah to always be joyful.” RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL

Rebbe Nachman-"It is a great mitzvah to always be joyful." RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL

Rebbe Nachman taught, "It is a great mitzvah to always be joyful." Not only does he say that it is a mitzvah, but a great mitzvah, as well. The question is, since when is it a mitzvah to be joyful all the time? There are certain times during the year when we are commanded to be joyful. For example, we are told to rejoice on the holiday of Sukkot, and it is called, 'the season of our joy.'  http://rabbiarthursegal.blogspot.com/2013/09/sukkoth-season-of-rejoicing-jewish_3409.html

Another time in the year when joy is mandatory is during the Hebrew month of Adar, of which our sages instructed us, Mi-shenichnas Adar marbin bi-simchah—"When Adar enters, we increase joy." The mere fact that there is a special mitzvah to increase joy during this month proves there is indeed a mitzvah to be joyful the rest of the year. Only during Adar, our role is to be even more joyful than usual. At the other end of the spectrum, there is the mourning period known as the "Three Weeks" which falls between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av [Tisha B'Av—a day of fasting and mourning over the destruction of both the first and second Temples and other calamities in Jewish history]. Other times of diminished joy include sitting shiva for seven days and the subsequent mourning period following the passing of a close family member. Nonetheless, this too is included within the framework of the mitzvah Rebbe Nachman refers to, "It is a great mitzvah to always be joyful." http://rabbiarthursegal.blogspot.com/2016/03/bluffton-sun-purim-rabbi-dr-arthur.html

The reason these two extremes are considered part of the same mitzvah is because "always joyful" may be defined as a broad and functioning mind, i.e., a mind in its proper place. This is an essential concept in Judaism which is mentioned in the Torah itself. To clarify this idea, let's look at when the mind works in a dysfunctional way. This occurs when one gets angry, which can happen anywhere. For instance, while waiting in line at the post office someone suddenly loses their temper. If you were to ask the individual at that very moment to explain what the problem is exactly, they would probably be unable to give a logical answer. This is because in the moment of anger, a person's mind falls from the optimal state needed to function properly. Likewise with one who is distressed, for example, by a bank overdraft or bounced check, or even larger financial problems. He might be in such a state of mind that if someone were to call at that very moment, he would have no patience. If the caller is someone he has problems with anyway, he is likely to lose his temper when normally he would be able to control his emotions, possessing a more balanced outlook. A state of constant joy means guarding the mind at the minimum level required to act as a human being with free choice. When the mind is rendered dysfunctional, free choice disappears. http://www.jewishspiritualrenewal.org/books/the-handbook-to-jewish-spiritual-renewal/

The definitive characteristic of a human being is having balanced choice. When a person is removed from this context, he or she is effectively transformed into an animal, since free choice is what distinguishes a human being from an animal. Guarding the mind's equilibrium is directly related to happiness and joy in general, which includes the joy discussed by our sages in the context of the annual cycle of holidays, as well as Rebbe Nachman's concept of joy. Beyond conceptual understanding, attaining this type of joy is simply a matter of accustoming ourselves to the proper definition of what constitutes true joy, since in the heat of the moment there is no time to think rationally. http://www.jewishspiritualrenewal.org/books/the-handbook-to-jewish-spiritual-renewal/

It is during good moments that we can repeatedly remind ourselves to be aware and on guard when those inevitable times come that can cause us to literally lose our minds. This awareness can help us catch ourselves in time to remain balanced when a test suddenly hits out of nowhere. How many times a day are we faced with such challenges? This is exactly why Rebbe Nachman says it is a great mitzvah to always be joyful. In other words, develop a constant daily awareness that we are human beings who require a certain level of proper mind function in order to think correctly. This is something that demands reflection, prayer, and effort but the payoff is great. May G-d have compassion upon us and grant us what it takes to be a human being—a true ben adam. http://www.jewishspiritualrenewal.org/books/the-handbook-to-jewish-spiritual-renewal/

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: HILTON HEAD JEWISH WEDDINGS: SAVANNAH JEWISH WEDDINGS

RABBI ARTHUR SEGAL: HILTON HEAD JEWISH WEDDINGS: SAVANNAH JEWISH WEDDINGS

Shalom:

This year we will learn about Judaism's Talmudic rabbis' universal lessons.

Can one tell what a child will be grow to be like by judging from his/her childhood behavior?  "Every pumpkin can be told from its stalk." (Talmud Beracoth 48a).

Deuteronomy 21:18 teaches a rebellious child, with no hope of changing, was executed. Talmudic rabbis didn't believe this.[Sanhedrin 70a].  They refer to the redemption of youthful Jacob ,the usurper, into Patriarch Israel [ God-wrestler]. A youthful con artist can change into a God-loving adult, and smashes the pumpkin theory .

If we deem a child to be a future scholar, chances are he will be. Conversely, if a child isn't doing well and we deem him suited to a tanner's life ( the Talmud's not-so-likeable profession), he will most likely follow that path.  The childhood friends Abaya and Rava were treated the first way.

For every child who we say,'' he was a brilliant kid and now is a scholar'', there is one who we could also say,'' he was not a bright kid, but look at him now. ''

It's better that we don't judge children, but give them positive re-enforcement and chances to succeed. Rabbi Abaye taught: "What is heard from a child's mouth is merely a repetition of what he has heard from his parents." (Talmud Sukkah 56b).

How did these two kids develop? Abaye became a great Babylonian rabbi spending  his life debating Rabbi Rava. Aside from great scholarship, Abaye was known for piety and loving peace, urging his disciples to "Be mild in speech; suppress your wrath; maintain good-will in relationships with your relatives as with others, even with strangers in the market-place." (Talmud Beracoth 17a).

Just as Lewis needed Martin, Rava needed Abaye. In the hundreds of debates recorded in the Talmud, Rava's opinion came out on top in all except for six. When the Head of the Yeshiva of Pumbedita [now Fallujah, Iraq] retired, Abaye became the new head of the academy. Rava moved to start his own.

Rava believed in ethics. His quote: "When one is brought for Heavenly Judgment, the first question asked is, 'Did you deal honestly with your fellow humans?'" (Talmud Shabbat 31a) is one of my favorite teachings in the Talmud.

"One of the Joys of being a Rabbi," says Rabbi Arthur Segal," is working closely with the bride and groom and officiating at their wedding." He can do this with couples living near by or with couples having a destination wedding in the greater beautiful Hilton Head Island area.

Rabbi Arthur Segal helps develop a custom ceremony with the couple so that each word in the ceremony rings true to them. His ceremonies can range from the very traditional to what ever the couples desires. Rabbi opines that this is the couple's special day, and to treat each wedding as unique.

For those who are having an interfaith wedding, Rabbi takes special care to respect both traditions, again with total input from the couple. He will be pleased to co-officiate at weddings, using non-Trinitarian language.

Rabbi will work closely with the wedding planer and/or caterer to make sure the wedding is seamless, and the bride and groom can totally enjoy themselves on their special day.

Rabbi Arthur Segal is available, and actually prefers, to be at the rehearsal, to ensure all is going smoothly, and to get to know the bridal party, and family, before the actual wedding day.

For those that wish to have a Ketubah, rabbi will work closely to make sure everyone's name has correct calligraphy on the document, in English and Hebrew, so the signing ceremony is flawless.
